My local mountains are the Cascades of the Pacific Northwest: big icy volcanoes rising from long undulating ridges, cloaked in fir an hemlock on the west and pine on the east.  I’ve hiked and climbed in Alaska, the Rockies, Sierras, and Scottish Highlands.  All are spectacular and have their own personality.  But Mount Hood, forty-five minutes from my front door, always feels like home.
